MASTER OF MEDICINE IN RADIOLOGY (MMed. Radiology)

Overview

1.0 INTRODUCTION/ PROGRAM BACKGROUND
Radiology is the specialty that encompasses all aspects of medical imaging that yield
information regarding anatomical, physiological and pathological status of body organs
and tissues. It includes interventional techniques as minimally invasive therapy.
Radiology traverses every discipline in Medicine and is core for effective and evidence-
based clinical practice. The performance of radiological procedures and image-guided
interventions; and the interpretation and reporting of medical images has associated
responsibilities, implications and medico-legal consequences. Only appropriately trained
imaging physicians should carry out this duty.

1.1 PHILOSOPHY
The Master of Medicine in Radiology syllabus of the University of Nairobi has
been revised to achieve internationally recognized scholarly and professional
excellence in diagnostic and interventional radiology education and training
through creation, preservation, integration, transmission and utilization of
acquired knowledge.

1.2 RATIONALE
The discovery of x-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895 remains one of the
milestones in the evolution of medical practice. Emerging scientific and technological
developments have given rise to new imaging modalities such as Ultrasound,
Computerized Tomography, Advanced Radionuclide Imaging, and Magnetic
Resonance Imaging. The dynamic nature of medical imaging sciences
underscores the need to regularly review and enhance the training programmes
in order to produce specialist radiologists who can communicate effectively and
offer valuable consultations to their clients and clinical counterparts; as well as
successfully compete with the rest of the world in keeping with the world-class
standards of the University.
The revision of this syllabus is in line with the University of Nairobi quality
management system which requires curriculum review every five years. The

1.3 PEER REVIEW
Revised syllabus has also taken into account contributions from various
stakeholders including professional and regulatory bodies.
The department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine runs an
internationally recognized programme. To date we have successfully produced
159 radiologists, for Kenya (132), Tanzania (17), Rwanda (4), Malawi (2), Zambia
(2), Zanzibar (1) and Seychelles (1). Needs assessment survey showed that there
was a dire need for more radiologists in the counties. Various stakeholders
meetings showed the need to clearly define the required competencies. The
revised M.Med syllabus is competency-specific and has included a course in
leadership, management and governance.

1.3 OBJECTIVES
The revised Masters of Medicine in Radiology syllabus is intended to provide
opportunity for integrated patient management in all the radiology disciplines
which include neuroradiology, head and neck imaging, pediatric radiology, tropical
radiology, emergency radiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, chest
radiology, abdominal radiology, women imaging, fetal imaging, breast imaging,
musculoskeletal imaging and oncologic imaging. These disciplines are distributed
into Radiology I, II and III. The aim is to develop defined competencies in each of
these areas and lay a solid foundation for future sub-specialization and fellowship
programmes.
