Message from the Chair

Hello and welcome to the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine.

The Department is a regional World Health Organization recognized training center for radiologists for East, Central and Southern Africa. To date we have successfully trained over 180 consultant radiologists many of whom are gainfully employed not only in Africa but also in Australia, UK and Canada and over 30 specialized sonographers and sonologists.

We have four main programmes in the Department; a Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Radiology, Master of Medicine in Radiation Oncology, Higher diploma course in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound and Fellowship in Interventional Radiology. We also have PhD programme in Radiology under the School of Medicine. Our programmes are interactive, problem-based, multi-disciplinary and student-centered to enable our students to achieve the highest levels of competence.

Our faculty consists of 4 senior lecturers, 4 lecturers, 1 medical physicist, 3 radiation oncologists seconded from the Ministry of Health, 1 senior technologist and 2 technologists. Also included in the teaching staff are 16 honorary lecturers and specialist radiologists from Kenyatta National Hospital which is our primary training facility, adjunct faculty from our various collaborating Universities, hospitals and industry partners. We are all actively involved in teaching basic concepts of radiology and radiation protection to undergraduate medical students and in the training, mentoring and supervision of postgraduate radiology and radiation oncology students, and interventional radiology fellows. Students from the other clinical disciplines in the College also rotate in the Department during their regular programmes or electives.

We benchmark with leading universities within Africa and around the world. Our vision as a Department is to produce specialist radiologists, radiation clinical oncologists, interventional radiologists and clinical sonographers who can effectively compete anywhere in the world.

We look forward to supporting you in the development of your academic and professional success.

With best wishes,

Dr. Gladys N. Mwango
